WEB HOSTING DIRECTORY
The goal of this site is to provide you with a basis for deciding which web hosting company is the one for you. If you are a first-time web designer searching for a place to host your site or an experienced developer looking for a better alternative to your current host, this site will help you make the right choice. Regardless of whether you are looking for web page domain, internet merchant account, or software web design, we can help you find the host that is right for you.
Tips for Choosing a Domain Name
Dot what?
There are many different extensions available right now. If you are a business, we recommend a ".com" suffix. It is the first extension that most people try when searching for a site. If ".com" is not available, our registration order form will provide you with alternative extensions as well as a list of prefixes and suffixes added to your original choice.
Avoid Trademarked Names
There are two really good reasons for this. First, it is not very nice. We have all heard the stories about the zany guy who thought ahead and bought "some-huge-multi-million-dollar-company.com" and sold it to the company for enough money to retire on. But remember, those companies have spent a lot of time and money creating their brand, and it would really be unfortunate if the tables were turned. The second reason to avoid trademarked names is that companies are no longer opening their pocketbooks to get their names back. They are calling their lawyers. Also, pending legislation will soon make it very difficult to register someone else’s trademarked name.
Register your Domain ASAP
Domain names are being snatched up faster than candy at the St. Patrick’s Day parade. You must register soon unless you want to get stuck with "the-domain-name-that-no-one-wanted.net". You do not have to have a webmaster, an e-commerce department or a web design consultant.
One May Not be Enough
Sometimes, it is not a bad idea to register several similar domain names. If you have "yourname.com", register "yourname.net" so no one else takes it. You can register your full company name and a shorter, easier to remember version. Some people even register common misspellings of their company’s name.
Character types
Just a reminder. Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and hyphens ("-"). Spaces and other symbols are not allowed, and they cannot begin or end with a hyphen. Domain names are not case sensitive and cannot exceed 63 total characters.
Ask Around
When you have settled on several available name choices, see what your friends and clients have to say. A name that may make perfect sense to you may be too hard for other people to remember. Is your domain easy to say? Is it hard to spell? Do you have to explain why you chose the name?
How to Drive Visitors Away from your Website
Your Home Page Takes Too Long to Load
Web surfers are getting less and less patient. There is no point in having a site at all if your visitors lose interest before they see your content. The faster your site loads, the more time you have to interest them in your product. When possible, keep your home page under 20K.
Your Site is Full of Broken Links
Whether they are images that don't load or buttons that don't go anywhere, broken links make a site look poorly maintained, out-of-date and sloppy. Always double-check your site whenever you make changes.
Your Site is Full of Spelling and Grammar Errors
Bad spelling and grammar can make a website look very unprofessional. Spell-checkers will catch most errors, but they can't catch everything. Using "your" instead of "you're" is a common mistake because both words are in the dictionary. Even if you are a good with spelling and grammar, have someone else check your site. Another pair of eyes may catch things that you wouldn't, just because they haven't been staring at the content for the past two weeks straight.
Your Site is Loaded with Too Much Advertising
It is hard to take a site seriously if it is nothing but an online billboard. There is nothing wrong with putting banners on your site, but make sure that the content is not hidden. In fact, you can often charge more per banner. Advertisers want to know that their ad won't be swallowed in a sea of their competitors' banners.
Before you Publish your Website
Check Spelling and Grammar
Most web development programs have a built in spell checker, but it is a good idea to have a friend or coworker double check your pages. Words like "their" and "there" will go through a spell checker, but may not be used properly.
Make Sure that each Page has Title and Description Meta Tags
You want to be sure that when people bookmark your site, there is a relevant title attached to it. The description meta tags are useful for search engine spiders.
Make Sure that Pages Look Correct in all Major Browsers
Explorer and Netscape tend to interpret code differently. A table cell with a background color could look perfect in Explorer, but may show up as colorless in Netscape because certain versions of Netscape will not recognize the background color in a cell if it is empty.
Include a Feedback or Contact Link
It is almost guaranteed that you will not catch every error on your site the first time you upload it. Make it easy for visitors to notify you of any problems they encounter.
